Water turbines can be a very cost effective way of producing energy in this country as we do have plenty of water. These turbines are split into several categories.
Stream mounted turbines: These turbines are mounted in the flow of a river or stream to extract a low constant charge for battery charging. They are ideal where a constant charge is required to keep a battery at a constant charge. Although depending on the power requirements, during nightfall where power might not be used the batteries can still be charged ready for the next day. One of few available turbines that will do this is the adapted Ampair Under Water Turbine. This small turbine, although only 100 watts in power output can produce between 2.5 and 3Kwh per day in either battery charging or mini grid connect. The turbines can be linked in parallel to produce more power.
Pelton/Turgo Wheels: These work with a constant pressure of water being thrust onto the Pelton wheel itself to rotate an alternator to produce energy. Ideally a pipe is placed into a lake and dropped down the side of a hill and connected to the pelton wheel, the pipe is reduced in size at the pelton wheel to increase the force on the wheel. These can be controlable which can assist in conserving the water in the lake/pond.
